Capital Metro to Cut Ozone-Causing Emissions with Diesel Fuel Additive from ORYXE Energy

Bus Fleet to Burn Cleaner with State-Approved Fuel Technology

Austin, TX (PRWEB) June 19, 2007 -- As Central Texas enters into a critical summer for compliance with federal clean air standards, ORYXE Energy is helping with air quality efforts by supplying the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority with its emissions-reducing diesel fuel additive, ORYXE™ LED.

The technology is scientifically proven to reduce several harmful emissions, including nitrogen oxides (NOx), one of the main contributors to the ground level ozone problem in Central Texas.

Thanks to the efforts of Capital Metro and other fleets across the state, ORYXE LED is removing thousands of tons of NOx from the air
This month, Capital Metro will begin using the ORYXE additive in its diesel buses and support vehicles. With an average of 140,000 one-way trips per day, Capital Metro has the highest per-capita ridership in Texas.

"It's important for us to do what we can to clean up the air and protect the health of our citizens," said Fred Gilliam, Capital Metro's President and Chief Executive Officer. "This technology approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is the next step in our commitment to reduce emissions."

The City of Austin and Travis County are already utilizing ORYXE LED to reduce diesel emissions in more than 1,400 fleet vehicles. The additive achieves a greater than 5.7 percent reduction in NOx, as demonstrated in official testing mandated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

"Thanks to the efforts of Capital Metro and other fleets across the state, ORYXE LED is removing thousands of tons of NOx from the air," said ORYXE Energy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James M. Cleary. "We're proud to partner with Capital Metro to help the region with its air quality and climate protection programs."

Controlling NOx is one of the primary emissions-reduction strategies in the Early Action Compact, an agreement between local governments and the EPA to comply with federal clean air standards. Ground level ozone levels measured in Central Texas continue to be right on the cusp of the federal standard of 84 part per million. 2007 is the final year the EPA considers in the 3-year average of ozone levels to determine whether the region complies with clean air requirements.

"We have entered a critical ozone season for Central Texas where every effort counts towards achieving the clean air standard," said Deanna Altenhoff, Executive Director of the CLEAN AIR Force of Central Texas. "Capital Metro's use of ORYXE LED to reduce NOx in their diesel vehicles is a very positive contribution towards improved air quality in our region."

The additive is produced by ORYXE Energy at its plant near Houston and is mixed with diesel fuel locally and then delivered to Capital Metro fuel storage facilities.

The use of the ORYXE LED additive is part of Capital Metro's ongoing commitment to clean air in Central Texas. Some additional efforts made by the agency include:

  • Converting to Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) three years before federal requirements took effect.
  • Purchasing a third hybrid electric bus for its fleet.
  • Providing Toyota Prius hybrid electric cars for its Greenride carpool program.
  • Re-powering 98 bus engines, which removed 200 tons of NOx from the air.
