Baptist Medical Center Creates New Web Page for Prostate Treatment Options in Mississippi
In an effort to educate men on their prostate cancer treatment options in Mississippi, Baptist created a new web page to explain the variety of treatments.
(PRWEB) June 29, 2007 -- Baptist Cancer Services, a division of Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Miss., has created a new web page to explain the different treatment options for prostate cancer. The new link is available on the cancer page of Baptist's website at www.mbhs.org then click the prostate cancer treatment link on the left side of the page.
Through the years, Baptist Cancer Services, a division of Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Miss., offers annual free prostate screenings every September and a variety of free educational seminars helping men understand their risk and treatment options.
"Through our research, we found out many men are leaving the state of Mississippi for prostate cancer treatment because they do not realize all their options are available right here in their hometown," said Robby Channell, hospital spokesman. "We have been working on screening, early detection and education. Now it's time to let men know Baptist the traditional and new treatment options."
About two years ago, Baptist installed the latest in advanced technological treatment of prostate cancer. The da Vinic Surgical System performs a minimally invasive, robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy.
"The da Vinci System cannot be programmed nor can it make decisions on its own," said Kempf Poole, director of Baptist's Surgery Department. "The system requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from a surgeon. This technology seamlessly translates the surgeon's movements into precise, real-time movements of the surgical instruments inside the patient," Poole added.
Other forms of treatment explained on the website are traditional radiation therapy and radioactive seed implants. Also, a prostatectomy is the surgical removal of the prostate and nearby tissues where cancer may have spread. It is most often used in the early stages when cancer cells are located only within the prostate.
"Potential patients should know Baptist's team of physicians and clinical professionals will work with a patient and his physician to determine the best treatment options," Channel added. "Our prostate cancer web page is to educate people on the treatments available at Baptist."
The web page has links to help patients find a physician and tour the cancer center. Baptist Cancer Services Navigator can also assist in getting patients to the right clinician for help.
