Smoking Can Seriously Harm Your Love Life, Survey Reveals

A survey by dating website CupidBay.com has revealed that 33% of women and 26% of men would not date a smoker, but 'smirting' is still rife. The research also highlights that very few people find smoking a turn-on.

London, UK (PRWEB) June 28, 2007 -- The July smoking ban could help the health of the nation's love life, according to dating website CupidBay.com (www.cupidbay.com).

A significant proportion of both sexes claimed that smoking was actually a turn-off -- 28% of women and 25% of men -- with a further 27% of men saying that it could be a passion killer. The top complaint was smelly breath (and associated 'ashtray' kiss). This was followed by bad smelling clothes and hair. However a number of respondents cited the health risks and the 'waste of money' as a turn-off.

Stereotypes about smoking being cool, alluring and sexy were shattered with just 5% of men saying that they found women who smoked a turn-on and only 3.5% of female respondents finding it sexy in a man. In fact 19% of men and 22% of women who answered said that they had made a partner quit smoking.

Over a quarter of the men surveyed said they would not date a smoker and a further 19% said it would depend. Predominantly this depended upon how much their potential love interest smoked and how attracted they were to the person. This sentiment was mirrored amongst the 22% of female respondents who said that they might date a smoker. A third however would not even contemplate going out with someone who smoked. However the survey revealed that 'smirting' (smoking and flirting) was a common occurrence, with many respondents claiming that they had sparked up more than just a cigarette on their smoking break. Unsurprisingly the most common ice-breaker was asking for a light.

"Smoking often evokes strong feelings -- for and against -- and this can have significant implications for relationships," said Francis Deacon, relationship expert for CupidBay.com. "Smoking is a lifestyle choice and often when looking for a partner we consciously, or subconsciously, look for people with similar outlooks and interests to our own. Opposites can and do attract, but if one partner is vehemently anti-smoking and the other smokes 50-a-day the relationship is probably doomed."
