Cotswolds in the summer

There can be few more beautiful places in Britain than the Cotswolds in summer. Quintessentially English, Laurie Lee's description of the area in " Cider with Rosie " - gentle rolling hills, hidden valleys with clear running streams, mellow honey-coloured dry stone walls and lush green tranquil woodlands - is as true today as it was when he first wrote it more than 50 years ago. It really is an area of outstanding natural beauty, dotted with sleepy villages and pretty market towns. You'll find some of the most influential gardens in England, including Kiftsgate and Hidcote, famous for their beautiful borders brimming with fragrance and colour. Nature lovers can stay at grand old Buckland Manor Hotel, (so old it was mentioned in the Domesday book), fresh vegetables, herbs and fruit are grown in immaculate grounds and used to high acclaim in the restaurant.

Other defining characteristics of the Cots wolds are wonderful antique shops, old-fashioned pubs and the age-old ritual of afternoon tea. Towns like Chipping Campden, Stow on the Wold and Moreton in Marsh are well worth a visit, (see our map for hotel recommendations). You're more likely to find traditional grocery stores than Starbucks, and Stow has over forty different antique dealers alone. If you find yourself in the Moreton area, don't miss Chastleton House, one of England's finest and most complete Jacobean houses. Culture vultures should also head to Stratford Upon Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare and home to the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre where you can see clever contemporary productions of all the classics. If this sounds too heavy hitting for children, take them to the The Cotswold Motoring and Toy Museum, in Bourton-on-the-Water. The vintage collection of cars includes Morris Minors, Austin Sevens, Jaguars and a London taxi which has over 700,000 miles on the clock and has visited most major cities in Europe.

Top Tip: Foodies musn't miss the best gastro pubs in the area. The Churchill Arms in Chipping Campden (Tel: 01386 594000) serves the ultimate sticky toffee pudding, and it is worth driving to The Fox in Lower Oddington (01451 870555) for the cosy atmosphere and fantastic pub grub.
