About the Author

Carol McKibben lost her self-respect at the age of eight, when she became a fat kid due to a glandular disorder. Because she grew up with parents who did not know how to love each other, Carol lost sight of what love really meant, even when it was standing before her.

For years, Carol only saw herself as "the fat girl," even when she triumphed over her thyroid problems and grew into an attractive young woman. "It's so important to be good-looking," her mother told her, pleased at the transformation. "Always keep your looks; they'll take you far in this world."

Without role models to teach her what was really important in a relationship, Carol finds herself drawn to controlling, selfish men. She ends up marrying her college sweetheart, and her world spirals downward from there.
