Boys and Girls Club Launches Cell Phone Drive in Oklahoma
The Boys and Girls Club has joined with American Cell Phone Drive to raise money for local programs through used cell phone donations from the community.
Edmond, OK (PRWEB) July 8, 2007 -- The Oklahoma Boys and Girls Club has partnered with American Cell Phone Drive in an effort to raise funds for its local youth programs. In coming months, the Boys and Girls Club plans to expand its community cell phone recycling program to other states throughout the country.
Not only does the program help the Boys and Girls Club raise money for important community youth programs, donating cell phones through American Cell Phone Drive also keeps cell phones and their toxic components out of landfills.
American Cell Phone Drive says that it created its most community-friendly cell phone donation program to date for the Boys and Girls Club, making it even simpler for Oklahomans to donate without any cost and without having to bring their old cell phones to a location for drop off.
"Our goal was to make it as simple as possible for people to accomplish several positive tasks at once; to de-clutter by finding a purpose for old cell phones, to keep phones out of landfills, and to donate to a worthy cause like the Boys and Girls Club," says American Cell Phone Drive President Tom Pace.
Environmental Protection Agency regulations state that toxic items such as cell phones should be kept out of landfills because of their destructive effect on the environment. Cell phones are constructed of materials known as 'persistent toxins' that don't easily decompose after disposal. With more than 156 million Americans now using cell phones, many of them upgrading for new phones every year or two, the problem of disposed cell phones in landfills has become a severe problem. According to the EPA, more than 125 million cell phones are discarded each year, resulting in more than 65,000 tons of waste.
"There is no longer a need to throw away an old cell phone with donation programs that positively impact not only the environment and also raise money for fantastic local non-profit organizations like the Boys and Girls Club," says Pace.
