An affordable, GPS-based child tracking system has been launched by Blue Tree Services Ltd, offering continuous location tracking with four-metre accuracy for just £19.95 per month.
Timed for the "back to school" period this unique and affordable system continuously tracks a child's exact location and is a "lite" and more affordable version of the UK's first personal GPS tracking system launched in March.
BlueRanger Starter Pack was developed in response to the needs of parents, who want to allow their kids the freedoms they themselves had in childhood, but also want the reassurance that their children are safe. The BlueRanger GPS tracking system allows them to constantly review the location and wellbeing of their child, and be alerted if something is wrong.
Other similar products have been launched in the last few months but few if any are available and none are yet offering continuous GPS tracking and movement sensors.
With BlueRanger each child being monitored wears a lightweight GPS tracking device which allows the parent to view their child's position on a personalised mapping system. This can be performed either through a secure site on the Internet or through an additional mobile PDA device. The mobile device shows its own location as well as that of the monitored units, making it easier to find someone on the move. The Internet based application is designed to make it easy to track large numbers of children simultaneously.
Full BlueRanger functionality (available as an upgrade) includes a panic alarm which allows the child to alert parents if they are in trouble; a movement sensor that can detect whether the unit is being worn or if it has been subject to a shock such as a fall; a low battery alarm; and unlimited geofence boundaries with alarms.
Although it has been possible for people to carry alarms for some time, these alarms were either linked to a physical location or allowed for only single location requests. With BlueRanger, continuous tracking means if the unit can report its location, it will.
Mike Smuts, Managing Director of Blue Tree Services, commented "We have seen a huge demand for this product from across all sectors of society, this is a robust and easy to wear product. It's good to know that parents can allow their children a little more freedom and at the same time manage their independence."
BlueRanger portable units use GPS and the cellphone network to send positioning information to secure servers, these are then able to relay information back to the license holder showing the location of the units anywhere in the UK or Ireland (for the Starter Pack, international roaming is available in the upgraded version).
The units are designed to maintain a fixed cost for data transmission, allowing the operators of the unit to be able to budget efficiently. Units are also able to prolong their battery life by reducing the amount of charge used when the battery power falls below a certain threshold.
BlueRanger Starter Pack is available from 1 August 2007.
