RV Owners Turning to Self-Storage Steel and Metal Buildings

With many cities and towns banning the storing of RVs in driveways and on streets, RV owners are looking to self-storage facilities to keep their RVs safe, sound and out of the way.

If a customer buys from a certain dealer, they can get a discount on storing it at your facility. Just make sure that you're partnering with a reputable dealer if you decide to go that route.

There are more than 30 million RVs on U.S. highways. Unfortunately, there are no places to store them. Many cities and towns have passed ordinances against keeping RVs in driveways or parked on streets, leaving RV enthusiasts in a lurch. And with more people looking into the purchase of RVs, the problem of storage will only get worse.

Because of this, a growing number of RV owners are looking to self-storage steel and metal buildings to keep their recreational vehicle safe, sound and out of the way.

"RV storage is a huge problem for RV owners, especially if they want quick access," said Dean Brown, president of American Steel Buildings. "Self-storage facilities that offer RV storage are tapping in to a huge market."

According to Brown, running an RV self-storage facility isn't too different from running a regular self-storage facility, and even easier in some cases. RV storage is good business for the owners of self-storage steel and metal buildings. RVs are big, expensive pieces of equipment that their owners are usually more than willing to pay to keep somewhere safe and secure. The delinquency rate for RV owners is about 2 percent, and RV owners are going to need somewhere to store their RV year after year, making them long-term clients.

"In the self-storage business, you'll sometimes get clients who only need a unit for a few months, and then they won't need storage again for a long time," said Brown. "With RVs, their owners are probably going to keep them around for many, many years, meaning they'll need a place to store the RV for many, many years to come."

It's also a relatively easy idea to market. Brown suggests partnering with an RV dealer in your area for referrals.

"They want to sell RVs, and you want to store them," Brown said. "If a customer buys from a certain dealer, they can get a discount on storing it at your facility. Just make sure that you're partnering with a reputable dealer if you decide to go that route."
