FDA Says Pet Food Recall Death Toll Unknown, Little Acknowledgment for Grieving Pet Owners

Although the Food and Drug Administration will probably never know the exact number, nearly 9,000 consumers allege their pet's death was due to the pet food recall of earlier this year. Peternity.com is a website for the thousands of grief stricken owners whose bereavement over the death of a pet is often considered silly or childish by our society's standards.

Brea, CA (PRWEB) July 26, 2007 -- Thousands of beloved cats and dogs died this year due to contaminated pet food, leaving behind grief stricken owners whose bereavement over the death of a pet is often considered silly or childish by our society's standards. As part of the healing process, some pet owners go to sites such as Peternity.com for pet memorials.

These grieving pet parents go to Peternity.com to find the perfect pet memorials and pet grave markers. "Most of our memorial items are personalized through engraving or embroidery with the pets' (and sometimes peoples') names, dates of birth and death, nicknames, and specially chosen parting words and epitaphs. We also provide a large library of animal graphic images by breed for a more specific design," said Colleen Mihelich, President of Peternity.com.

"Just as owning, caring for, and loving a pet shapes and modifies the life of an owner, a pet's death alters and reshapes an owner's sense of who he is and how he is to behave. The death of a pet is more than the demise of 'just a dog' or 'just a cat'; it signals the end of a unique period in a person's life and can dramatically change the person's best laid plans for the future. The greater the pet's role and importance in a person's life, the more likely its death will affect him or her deeply," said Jamie Quackenbush, MSW, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

"In addition to providing beautiful works of art that can be used to memorialize one's cherished pet, it is also very important to the folks at Peternity.com to provide support, a compassionate ear, and a sympathetic shoulder," said Mihelich. "We're not just selling memorial items, but often 'holding customers' hands' through a very important step in the grief process -- formally marking the passing of a dear loved one."

"One of the biggest myths about the grief that accompanies pet loss is that it's somehow different than grieving the loss of a human. When we love and we lose that love, whether it's a human or an animal, we feel grief," said Marty Tousley, Bereavement Counselor.

The Family Relations Journal surveyed 242 couples whose pet had died during the 3 years prior to the survey. "About half of the wives and more than a quarter of husbands reported they were 'quite' or 'extremely' disturbed by the death of their family pet. For husbands, pet loss was rated about as stressful as the loss of a close friendship, for wives about as stressful as losing touch with their married children."

Spencer and Sarah Schluter and their dog, Grr, were a family. Grr's death this year has been traumatizing for the young couple. "To some people dogs are just animals, but to us, he was a child," said Grr's owner, Spencer Schluter.

Peternity.com is an online pet memorial site that specializes in pet grave markers, pet memorial stones, jewelry, blankets, and urns for loving "pet parents" who want to memorialize a pet that has died.
