Aggressive Pigeon Netting Attacks in New York City This Summer Highlight Need for Humane Pigeon Control

New York City has received negative press in the past weeks due to more aggressive and frequent pigeon netting attacks in the area. These netters capture the birds and sell them out of state to restaurants and pigeon shooting galleries. This prohibited practice highlights the continued need for humane pigeon control and protection for the birds.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 31, 2007 -- In recent weeks, news of pigeon nettings in the New York City area has become more frequent. Reportedly, the illegal netters lure famished pigeons with food and they are then netted and purportedly sold out of state to restaurants and to pigeon shooting galleries.

Concern from animal rights groups and the public is growing towards these acts, yet Government authoritative groups have taken little action. The New York Bird Club and others are working toward getting the situation rectified. In fact, some concerned citizens have taken it upon themselves to set up surveillance teams in an effort to get concrete evidence of the illegal nettings.

Basically, pigeon netting falls into murky territory as far as the law is concerned. Under the Health Department, pigeons are categorized as a nuisance animal, which allows people to hire pest control services to exterminate them or to undertake pigeon control methods. Yet, the Environmental Conservation Law protects wild birds (pigeons included) and trapping them is a violation. A great deal of proof is required to issue a violation to a netter.

"I am really concerned about the pigeon netting attacks taking place in New York. I am a firm believer in humane pigeon control methods, and it sickens me to hear that these netters are getting away with the harming and eventual killing of these birds," comments Dave Jones from Deter-a-Pigeon.

Groups like the New York Bird Club and concerned individuals report that they will continue the fight against the netters. Anyone interested in learning more about this issue is encouraged to contact the New York Bird Club. Home and building owners interested in learning more about humane pigeon control methods should contact Deter-a-Pigeon.
