ShermansTravel.com Picks the Top Ten American Boardwalks

Top ten American boardwalks include Santa Cruz, Ocean City, New Jersey, and Kemah, Texas (http://www.shermanstravel.com/boardwalks).

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 31, 2007 -- Believing no summer is complete without a trip to the boardwalk, ShermansTravel.com, the web’s leading source for travel deals and destination advice, today announced its list of the Top Ten American Boardwalks.

Celebrating one of America’s most unique summer tourist attractions, ShermansTravel.com’s list highlights can’t-miss boardwalks from coast to coast including Santa Cruz, California, Kemah, Texas, and Ocean City, New Jersey. Editors based their picks on criteria such as amusements, food, activities, live entertainment, people watching, and history.

From classics like Coney Island to up-and-comers like Kemah, Texas, which just added a major new roller coaster, our list guides fun-seekers to America’s can’t miss boardwalks.
“While you can find boardwalks in many parts of the world, American boardwalks set the standard for pure, unadulterated summer fun,” said Arabella Bowen, editorial director of ShermansTravel.com. “From classics like Coney Island to up-and-comers like Kemah, Texas, which just added a major new roller coaster, our list guides fun-seekers to America’s can’t miss boardwalks.”

ShermansTravel.com’s Top Ten American Boardwalks are:

1.   Atlantic City, NJ – Home of the nation’s oldest (dating back to 1870) boardwalk, Atlantic City offers free summer concerts, mini-golf, amusement parks, and, of course, casinos.
2.   Coney Island, NY – From the legendary Cyclone to the Parachute Jump, visitors can see what made Coney Island America’s premier playground in the early 20th century.
3.   Kemah, TX – Family-friendly activities, restaurants, and a terrifying new roller coaster give this sprawling beach a carnival-like atmosphere that rivals the East Coast classics.
4.   Mission Beach, CA – The 2-mile long cement pathway is the perfect place for a jog or bike ride, but be sure to grab a bite to eat and a ride on the Giant Dipper while waiting for the nightly fireworks display.
5.   Ocean City, MD – Constructed in 1902, this 2.5-mile long stretch is packed with restaurants, shops, nightlife, and hotels, along with the country’s oldest operating carousel.
6.   Ocean City, NJ – This Jersey boardwalk will bring out the kid in you with its seemingly endless amount of fudge, pizza, and souvenir shops. Don’t miss coffee and a donut from Brown’s Restaurant.
7.   Rehoboth Beach, DE – The 1-mile boardwalk here is short but sweet: sample Dolle’s Candyland saltwater taffy, try a Stromboli at Nicola Pizza, and hit up the rides at Funland.
8.   Santa Cruz, CA – Once known as the “Coney Island of the West,” this boardwalk offers everything from thrill rides to bowling, beach volleyball, and even ballroom dancing.
9.   Venice, CA – Rife with musicians, street performers, and rollerblading beauties, this scene makes for some of the best people-watching on the West Coast.
10.   Virginia Beach, VA – It may be made of concrete instead of wood, but Virginia Beach’s 3-mile boardwalk boasts all the traditional boardwalk pastimes, plus big-name music acts like the Beach Boys and the Virginia Symphony.
