Being asked for an opinion has become common practice for local retailer, Cinda Baxter. Being asked for one that will be quoted in a national magazine or website is also common practice. But being asked to share those opinions as the newest member of the most influential advisory board in the retail world is something quite out of the ordinary.
"When I received the initial inquiry call, we were in our 'high season;' the possibility of joining the board didn't really register with me until an official invitation arrived in June," she explains. "The group responsible for guiding the largest mart in the world was asking me to be a part of their mission. That's quite an honor, in my book."
Since opening an upscale stationery boutique called Details, Ink. in Minneapolis 13 years ago, Baxter has been a busy woman. From the store's West Lake Street location, she launched what was the city's first "true stationery store," in her words. Within one year, she gained national recognition with the first of two Retail Excellence Awards and a parade of speaking engagements.
AmericasMart Atlanta -- also known as The Atlanta Mart, in retail shorthand--has its own distinguished history as the world's single largest venue for everything from gifts and home furnishings to apparel and jewelry. Twice a year, it takes on the daunting task of welcoming hundreds of thousands of gift buyers from around the globe to purchase products during their signature Atlanta International Gift, Home Furnishings and Area Rug Markets.
"The firsthand field experience retailers and wholesalers bring to the Advisory Board is valuable for the continued success and growth of the Atlanta markets," says Baxter. "The insight we have to share can help them better prepare for what's coming around the corner while extending the most buyer-friendly welcome possible."
"I see the AmericasMart Advisory Board as a group of industry representatives whose role is to assist AmericasMart in its endeavor to provide its customers, retailers and wholesalers with the most productive trade show environment in the United States, if not the world," adds Karl Goldberg, chairman of the Advisory Board and President of Somerset Marketing Group, Inc.
"I'm deeply flattered to be part of this board," adds Baxter as she tidies up a nearby display shelf. "The inspiration that comes from participants of this caliber is truly remarkable, and reminds you we're all capable of doing great things."
