Launched in April 2007, transfermymembership.com is an innovative website developed to link people wishing to trade unwanted gym memberships with people wanting to purchase a membership. Mr. O'Neal established the site because he recognised considerable demand for a common place where the ownership of unwanted gym/health club or golf club memberships could be transferred. He explains, "Many people buy into a health club contract and, for a variety of reasons, they're unable to fulfill the length of the contract with the health club facility."
Interest in the site has exceeded all expectations, partly owing to the positive media reports both published in Brisbane newspapers and broadcasted on television. Mr. O'Neal confirms he has received encouraging feedback from the many users of transfermymembership.com and that the service has also received favorable attention from gyms and health clubs.
Consumers' considerable response to advertising memberships on the site was not unexpected. The fitness industry has been screaming out for a service like transfermymembership.com, which provides consumers with more flexibility in subscribing to a gym or health than was previously available. Mr. O'Neal explains, "If an individual subscribes to a gym and finds that the gym doesn't exactly fit their exercise interest, or if their financial situation changes throughout the membership, they are able to use the website to trade the length of their remaining gym membership to another owner."
What has been surprising is that favorable response to the site by many health clubs. Mr. O'Neal believes that some gyms are recognizing the site not only provides greater flexibility for the consumer but it also enhances their ability to attract members whose future is uncertain and they are using Transfermymembership.com as a selling tool. O'Neal explains "It enables gyms/health clubs to more easily sell yearly memberships to patrons who are concerned about being locked into an annual contract…. At present many people shy away from month to month memberships because of the hefty membership fees involved with subscribing in this manner."
