Two Fairfield County marketing firms created a unique promotion for New Orleans championship football game.

Two Fairfield County advertising agencies, G-Funk Sports & Entertainment and The Voice, recently combined efforts in an innovative and successful undertaking for the Arena Football League's ArenaBowl XXI championship week in New Orleans.

The game, between the Columbus Destroyers and San Jose SaberCats, was played at the New Orleans Arena in Louisiana on July 29th. At the turnstiles, the 17,000+ fans attending the sold-out game chose a Champs Sports Play & Win Sweepstakes card for either Columbus or San Jose. Then, based on the performance of their chosen team on the field, fans scratched off fields on their game card to earn points. For instance, if San Jose scored the first touchdown (which they did), fans scratched off the appropriate field on their game card to see how many points they earned. They totaled their points at the end and turned them in to qualify to enter to win a big screen TV, cash, Champs Sports gift cards or other prizes. This groundbreaking game helped generate fan involvement and a rooting interest throughout the championship game, which was won by San Jose 55-33. It is believed to be the first game of its kind to be featured as an interactive in-game fan promotion on this scale for a championship game in any sport.

In addition to the in-game promotion, the agencies organized and executed a hugely successful parade through the streets of New Orleans - complete with a jazz band, AFL mascots, cheerleaders, beads and fans in town for the big event. The parade fed into an outdoor Styx concert at the Riverwalk along the Mississippi River. 12,000 people attended the concert - the largest crowd ever at this venue. Other game-week events included a kickoff party at Harrah's Casino and Hotel as well as pre-game and post-game parties at the New Orleans Arena. The agencies also negotiated and managed media partnerships with television, radio and newspaper outlets in the New Orleans market, on the AFL's behalf.
