Lipodissolve Not in Kansas Anymore: Dallas Plastic Surgeon Supports Medical Board's Rare Move to Ban Procedure

Dr. Robert Schwartz, one of Dallas' best-known plastic surgeons and host of the popular "Plastic Surgery Today" radio show, today praised the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts' virtual ban on the use of Lipodissolve.

Dallas (PRWEB) August 22, 2007

Dr. Robert Schwartz, one of Dallas' best-known plastic surgeons and host of the popular "Plastic Surgery Today" radio show, today praised the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts' virtual ban on the use of Lipodissolve. The board said patients may only receive the controversial fat-dissolving injection as part of a physician-authorized drug trial.

"We warn our listeners and patients not to jump on every new cosmetic surgery bandwagon," Dr. Schwartz said. "Many new procedures and technologies are not adequately tested before they are unleashed on the public."

The Kansas restrictions are expected to take effect next month. The board said it has received at least half a dozen complaints about facilities that give the injections. The complaints, now under investigation, include problems with business practices and patient side effects such as infections, nodules and nausea.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) warned in a May 14 statement against the use of Lipodissolve and similar treatments until they have been medically proven. A controlled study of Lipodissolve under FDA supervision is currently being conducted by the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation.
