Kansas City, MO and New York, NY (PRWEB) August 23, 2007
Kuwait-based comic book publisher Teshkeel has announced a new agreement with uclick, a leader in digital entertainment, to distribute the Islamic-themed comic book The 99 on mobile phones throughout North America, UK, Australia and South Africa.
The 99 will debut on uclick's GoComics Mobile Comic Book Reader in the fall of 2007, with new chapters released weekly.
A rising star in the publishing realm with a foothold in a rapidly growing demographic, Teshkeel has partnered with powerhouse North American comic book publishers Marvel Comics and DC Comics to translate and adapt those companies' well-known properties in the Middle East and North Africa. The 99 is Teshkeel's first original comic book property. Originally launched in the MENA region in English and Arabic in Spring 2006, the series will be making its US print debut in October 2007.
An epic adventure tale, The 99 tells the story of a group of heroes on a quest to discover 99 gems containing the light of ancient wisdom. The 99 is a traditional superhero story in appearance only. At its core, it's a comic book with a mission: to use the color, energy and vitality of the superhero genre to demonstrate the range and diversity of Islamic culture. With a dynamic cast of characters that spans the globe, The 99 offers a multi-faceted perspective of Islam all-too-rarely seen in other media.
"Our goal is to tell the story of The 99 in as many places and through as many channels as possible," explained Teshkeel CEO and The 99 creator, Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, "Uclick's user friendly software and multi-platform approach made them an ideal partner to help spread the message of The 99. We're excited to be working with them to bring The 99 to new audiences around the world."
The 99 joins a diverse collection of exciting comic books optimized for mobile phone screens. The star-studded GoComics lineup includes Jeff Smith's wildly popular Bone series; the Shakti-style epics of Virgin Comics; the sci-fi fantasy hits GØDLAND and Elephantmen; the webcomic-turned-comic-book PvP; the manga and anime horror import Guilstein; high-flying martial arts fun starring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many more. The Mobile Comic Book Reader is available on all major carriers, including Cingular, Verizon and Sprint.
"With the addition of The 99, as well as the recently launched mobile titles from Virgin Comics, we're gradually increasing the variety of cultures fans can encounter on the GoComics Mobile Comic Book Reader," said uclick Manager of Product Development Harold Sipe. "We're excited to partner with the innovators at Teshkeel to bring The 99 into the mobile realm."
