Online magazine and community helps parents connect

We wanted to create a place online where parents could come and talk freely, a sort of virtual coffee house where parents can discuss problems and get practical help

Empoweringparents.com is a new magazine and online community for parents who are actively seeking solutions to parenting issues. In addition to articles, parenting tips and book reviews, a forum is in development on the site in which parents can post comments, discuss problems, give advice and offer friendship and support. Although the publication was launched earlier this year, parents are flocking to the site -- the magazine now boasts more than 70,000 subscribers.

Steve Anderson is the founder of Legacy Parenting, the company that launched Empowering Parents. "We wanted to create a place online where parents could come and talk freely, a sort of virtual coffee house where parents can discuss problems and get practical help," he said. "We called it 'Empowering Parents' because we want our website to do just that -- empower parents by giving them the skills they need to parent to the best of their abilities."

The monthly online publication features straight talk and real results for parents whose children fall within the range of normal acting out to those who have ADHD or ODD and are presenting more challenges. Articles run the gamut from 'The War at Home: Oppositional Defiant Disorder' to 'Motivating the Unmotivated Child.' Noted child therapists James Lehman and Dr. Bob Myers are regular contributors to the publication.

"At Empowering Parents, we've created a place for parents and care-givers to learn about kids' issues, discuss problems and get skills they can use right away in a judgment-free zone," said Elisabeth Wilkins, editor of the magazine. Wilkins, the mother of a four-and-half year old, added, "In the end, we want to provide lifelong learning for parents in a single place, a safe harbor where parents can come in out of the storm and get knowledge and support."

Empoweringparents.com also features One Minute Transformations, behavior modification techniques by noted child therapist James Lehman, creator of the Total Transformation Program, that parents can use to change their child's behavior in one minute, as well as parenting tips, resources for parents and a forum, currently in development, where parents can meet online and exchange ideas.

Empowering Parents is a single place on the web where parents can get answers to their toughest questions. Its publisher, Legacy Parenting Company, is headquartered in Westbrook, Maine, and is the world's premier producer and publisher of behavior management products and child behavior programs for families. With an annual growth rate of 41% in 2006, Legacy puts the knowledge of America's most respected psychologists in the hands of parents to give them practical tools they can learn and apply quickly in their families. The company's web site is http://www.LegacyParenting.com.
