Park West Gallery Artist Biography series welcomes the public to discover the contemplative world of artist, Robert Kipniss. Though he uses a subdued color palette to depict familiar symbols and simple settings, Kipniss is able to elevate the physical world to evoke enchanting sentiment.
Says Kipniss, "The central impetus in my work has been the endless range of feelings and thoughts evoked within me by the basic act of seeing, always in isolation and with a haunting intensity… These experiences were vivid moments - sometimes prolonged, sometimes brief. I longed to capture them, to paint their hold on me, and to see if they could last."
Kipniss was born in New York City in 1931, where he later studied at the Art Students League. In 1954, he earned a Master's Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Iowa. Kipniss' artworks have since been exhibited worldwide at venues including; Museo de Arte Moderno La Tertulia, Columbia; Closson's Art Gallery, Cincinnati, Ohio; Szoke Gallery, New York City; and ICA in Tokyo, Japan.
He was the recipient of awards from the Society of American Graphic Artists (1979), the National Academy of Design (1976), and a prize in lithography from the Boston Printmakers (1999). Kipniss is also an elected member of the National Academy of Design, New York and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, London, UK.
His artwork adorns the permanent collections of prestigious museums including; the Chicago Art Institute; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Whitney Museum of Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; New York Public Library; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Detroit Art Institute; Yale University Museum; National Collection of Fine Arts, Smithsonian Institute; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; New Orleans Museum of Art; and The British Museum, London.
"If someone looks at my paintings and sees only trees and houses, then they don't see what I'm doing. I may be painting trees and houses, but when I look at them, that's not what I see. I see an atmosphere, a moment, a quickly passing experience that I'm trying to capture. My art is of intensity, of delving, of exploring the soul,"
- Robert Kipniss.
