Latest JV announcement by Saudi Aramco and Dow to develop a world scale chemicals and plastics production in Saudi Arabia, and other major expansion projects in Middle East are set to increase production capacity in the region. These include:
•Abu Dhabi -based polymer Borouge has awarded a contract worth approximately Dh1 billion ($300million) to Samsung Engineering for the construction of the new olefins conversion unit (OCU) for Borouge 2, the major expansion project in Ruwais Abu Dhabi
•Tasnee & Sahara Olefins and Basell Polyolefins have jointly established the Saudi Ethylene and Polyethylene Company (SEPC). It will produce some one million tons of ethylene, 285,000 tons of propylene, 400,000 tons of high-density polyethylene and 400,000 tons of low density Polyethylene together with a number of derivatives
With many of these capacity coming on stream in the next years, the gulf region is set to play a key role in the world's plastics output. Yet market sentiment is divided on whether demand from Asia especially China will be able to absorb the capacities coming of the Middle East in the future.
