Chargers Linebacker Shaun Phillips to Help Open New Headquarters for After-School All-Stars San Diego on September 13

NFL Veteran to Launch Fundraising Initiative to Support San Diego's Inner City Youth.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) September 5, 2007 -- As San Diego children head back to school, and the San Diego Chargers return to the gridiron, Chargers' linebacker Shaun Phillips has announced a new campaign to support After-School All-Stars (ASAS) San Diego. The new Shaun Phillips initiative called "SP's All-Star Sack Attack" will formally kick off on September 13th in conjunction with the official opening of ASAS' new headquarters at the historic Naval Training Center in Point Loma.

As part of the program, Phillips has pledged to donate $1,000 to After-School All-Stars' sports programs for every sack he records during the 2007 NFL season. Catalina Restaurant Group has signed on as the first sponsor that will match Phillips' donations.

Phillips will introduce the program during a wine and cheese grand opening celebration for ASAS San Diego's new headquarters. Other special guests include San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts and City Council members Brian Maienschein and Ben Hueso. The public is invited to attend.

"After-School All-Stars' sports programs provide a great outlet for children in San Diego to learn the principles of teamwork and discipline," said Phillips. "I am looking forward to having a great year, so hopefully many inner city children will be kept safe and benefit from the money raised by the All-Star Sack Attack Program."

The new headquarters will serve as the main office coordinating comprehensive, nationally-recognized after-school programming in San Diego. ASAS San Diego operates in several schools throughout the area. In addition to comprehensive after-school programs, they also offer enriching programs including Jump for Life, and All-Stars Sports Clubs and All-Stars Futures. As one of 13 affiliates of the national After-School All-Stars, the San Diego chapter is backed by model programs and a fifteen-year track record of giving children a safe after-school alternative while developing the skills to increase school performance and success in life. About Shaun Phillips
A native of Willingboro, NJ, Phillips is coming off a career best year in 2006 after registering 65 tackles and 11.5 sacks. Entering his fourth year with the Chargers, Phillips has recorded 125 total tackles and 22.5 sacks in 45 career games. This off-season, Phillips inked a contract extension that will keep him in San Diego through 2012.
