Trans Atlantic Systems, a leading provider of customized software to the transaction processing and telecommunications industries, has launched a new online background check and credential verification business. The new company will be known as Edify, Inc and will be headquartered in Atlanta
"With the time and cost of hiring the right person going up, companies are frequently victimized by unethical or fraudulent applicant information," says Ajit Jose, Vice President of Edify. "10% of applicants have criminal records and 40% of resumes contain lies or omissions," continued Jose. "The majority of those who are victimized could easily avoid these problems if they just took a look at their applicants before hiring." Jose went on to say that with a service like Edify now available and so easy to use not checking a potential employee's background is now considered negligent, thereby visiting a host of various workplace liabilities upon employers. Compliance issues, fraud, workplace violence, and negligent hiring liability are all major drivers for the increasing corporate concern about inadequate screening and verification methods.
Yet many businesses continue to neglect this important step in the hiring process, especially medium and small sized companies. One factor that puts smaller businesses at greater risk is that they have fewer divisions of responsibility than large outfits. One person may be in charge of an entire bookkeeping department, for instance. It takes more people to pull off a fraud in large businesses. Smaller businesses are 100 times more vulnerable to workplace fraud than large companies, according to the Report to the Nation on Occupational Fraud and Abuse. Also, the losses smaller businesses suffer from workplace fraud are proportionately greater than those suffered by big businesses.
Trusting everybody without taking precautions is a recipe for disaster. Neglecting background checks also can lead to dire legal consequences. Companies can be held liable for the willful misconduct of their employees, if the courts determine they were negligent in their hiring and retention. Suppose a company hires somebody without doing a background check, and the employee later assaults a customer. The customer then sues the company, showing that the employee had a string of assault convictions when he was hired. Damages in that kind of lawsuit can be tremendous. Doing pre-employment background checks is one way companies can protect themselves.
With need so great, what makes Edify different from other services available? Says Jose, "most internet background check sites are nothing more than outdated public record searches." Edify combines Security, Ease of Use and instant online results on the most current information to make the lives of hiring managers easier.
