De La Rue announces the AutoFacer™ module for the CPS1200-2000 family of banknote sorters. The patented technology marks the first time that users of ultra high speed banknote sorting equipment have been able to automatically face their notes on-line without compromising machine speed or productivity.

The AutoFacer™ is designed for cash providers who need to deliver faced banknotes to their end customers. It enables the facing procedure to be carried out at lower cost than has previously been possible, whilst reducing the overall physical size of the hardware now required to complete the process by up to 30%. The module can be fitted to new CPS machines or as an upgrade for existing users.

The requirement to face banknotes may be based on Central Banks' internal processes or legislation; or indeed on cultural acceptance of how notes should be received from self service dispensers, such as ATM's. Irrespective of the rationale, De La Rue has recognised that there is a need to provide customers, across the globe, with the facility to face banknotes as required.

Prior to the development of the AutoFacer™ customers would need to run batches of banknotes through a sorter twice in order to authenticate and then face. This required the operators to prepare batches of banknotes and process them twice, which was a time consuming process. With the advent of AutoFacer™ two parallel belt paths are introduced in the hardware's transport. The sorter will now detect if a banknote is unfaced, and automatically divert the banknote down the secondary belt where it is turned before being merged back into the mainstream and sent to its destination pocket; all in a time saving single pass.

Head of Pre-sales and Product Management, Ed Brindley, states, "The AutoFacer™ enables customers who need to face banknotes to dramatically reduce the volume of notes in the second pass, allowing cash centre staff to consistently meet their processing deadlines. This in turn reduces the pressures on each cash centre's shift pattern and improves the efficiency of the overall operation."

Managing Director of De La Rue's Cash Processing Solutions division, Sanjay Razdan, adds, "We believe that the AutoFacer™ is a great example of De La Rue's ability to react to industry needs and produce innovative products that not only meet market requirements but also deliver real efficiencies and process improvements for our customers."

Autofacer™ Q and A

How does it work?
The AutoFacer™ introduces two parallel belt paths into the transport. If a note is detected as faced it is diverted down a straight belt path to its destination pocket. If it is detected as unfaced it is sent through a secondary belt path that turns the note over. The note, now faced, is merged back into the main stream and sent to its destination pocket.

Can machines be upgraded?
Yes, all De La Rue CPS machines in the field can be upgraded.

What are the benefits of the AutoFacer™?
The AutoFacer™ allows facing of notes without needing extra pockets. In a non-facing machine 2 pockets must be allocated, one for face A and one for face B. With the AutoFacer™ only one pocket would be required per denomination.
With AutoFacer™ machine footprint, cost and complexity is reduced.

Where is the AutoFacer™ housed?
The AutoFacer™ is mounted in a dedicated 24" extension module. The machine length is therefore increased by this distance. However, the 5 pocket mid module that it will replace is 60", giving a 3' overall saving in machine length. This is becoming increasingly important as customers seek smaller footprint machines.

Is machine speed compromised?
No, the AutoFacer™ is fully tested to run at 2000 notes per minute. Machine productivity is not affected.

What are the naming conventions for AutoFacer™ machines?
The AutoFacer™ will be denoted by an AF suffix to the machine, e.g.
CPS1200/5/4 AF
CPS1800/10/6 AF

When is it available?
The AutoFacer™ is available with immediate effect.
A video clip showing the operation is also available for download on request.
