With back-to-school in full swing, today's college aged adults are heading outdoors in hopes of improving their cell phone signal reception. According to the zBoost Back-To-School Cell Phone Signal Survey commissioned by Wi-Ex (http://www.wi-ex.com), the leading provider of consumer cell phone signal boosters, and conducted by Harris Interactive®, 58 percent of college aged adult cell phone owners have made an effort to improve their signal reception when making or receiving cell phone calls in their home. In addition, of those adults who have done something to improve their cell phone signal reception 72 percent headed outside, 59 percent stood by their window, 58 percent used their home phone instead and 55 percent remained in one room.

With our newest product, the zBoost zPersonal, consumers now have access to the first affordably priced signal booster and no longer have to head outdoors or stand by a window to enjoy quality in-door cell phone coverage.

The zBoost Back-To-School Cell Phone Signal Survey also revealed that more than nine in ten college aged adults (92 percent) own a cell phone and of those the majority (87 percent) report that their cell phone is their primary phone.

"College aged adults want to enjoy all of the benefits of the mobile lifestyle. The majority of them use their cell phones as their primary phone and are demanding better reception in their parents' homes, dorms and apartments" said Lloyd R. Meese, President and CEO of Wi-Ex. "With our newest product, the zBoost zPersonal, consumers now have access to the first affordably priced signal booster and no longer have to head outdoors or stand by a window to enjoy quality in-door cell phone coverage."

The survey captured verbatim responses on what college aged adult cell phone owners who make cell phone calls at home have done to improve signal reception when attempting to make or receive a cell phone call in their home including:

  • Turned on speaker-phone and held the cell above my head
  • Stand on furniture to get higher in my house in hopes of retaining a signal
  • Hold onto a big piece of metal in order to get more signal
  • Walked around the house trying to find the best spot
  • Turn the phone off and back on

The zBoost zP is the first repeater-amplifier system for consumers that is reasonably priced. There are two versions of the zBoost zP -- wired (coupler/antenna attaches to the phone) for $99 and the more popular wireless version (antenna sits on the desk) for $169. The zBoost zP represents the lowest priced entry unit in the zBoost product family and in the cell phone signal booster category. The zPersonal provides consumers with an affordable solution that captures and amplifies the 800MHz signal or the 1900MHz bands for improved cell phone signal at home, the office or on the go. The package includes everything consumers need to improve their cell phone signal including a small window mount base unit and indoor antenna. The unit is designed to sit or hang in the window and a simple indoor antenna is cabled up to 20 feet across the room. The device comes in 2 flavors -- wired and wireless. The wireless antenna sits on your desk, the wired version must be connected to your phone. The unit is designed for a single user and increases coverage in an area of 4-6ft.

Like all Wi-Ex products, the zBoost zP uses patent-pending technology to protect the carrier network. In addition, it supports voice calls or data services and works with all phones and carriers except Nextel.

zBoost Back-To-School Cell Phone Signal Survey
This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of WiEx between August 3 and August 7, 2007 among 301 adults (ages 18 - 24). Figures for region, age within gender, education, household income and race/ethnicity were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents' propensity to be online.

With a pure probability sample of 301, one could say with a ninety-five percent probability that the overall results would have a sampling error of +/- 10 percentage points. Sampling error for data based on sub-samples may be higher and would vary. However, that does not take other sources of error into account. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no theoretical sampling error can be calculated.
