Richard Dorsey Debuts His Breakout Novel, The Sword Fighter

Taking readers back to 79 BC, author Richard Dorsey gives a taste of Rome's bloody history of oppression and cruelty.

Chester, NS (PRWEB) September 16, 2007 -- One feature that makes historical fiction so popular is an authors' ability to take readers on a journey into the past. By writing a fictional tale embedded in a specified historical period, an author is able to invoke readers' imaginations.

In his book, The Sword Fighter, Richard Dorsey takes readers back to the year 79 BC in what was known as Hispania, which we today know as Spain. During this time period, Rome has invaded and colonized Hispania. A growing civil unrest is taking place in response to Rome's occupation. Revolts are occurring with periodic attacks against Roman soldiers. The story centers on a young Hispanic Celt by the name of Marco. Marco is the son of a prominent family with deep roots in Hispania. Living in the small town of Castello, Marco is perfecting his craft as a Metal Smith. While he toils, he perfects the art of sword fighting.

In the midst of his labor, Marco finds himself caught between the Resistance and the occupying Romans. His journey as a sword fighter becomes interwoven with the Romans and Resistance when he discovers that his family and their home are in danger of being destroyed. Marco travels to his home called El Refugio, as the Romans under the command of Verres (Pompey's envoy), also make their way to his home with a plot to rob, kill, and destroy his family's legacy.

The Sword Fighter tells a tale of greed, brutality, and family loyalty. Readers are introduced to powerful and thieving Romans such as Quintus Metellus Pius and Verres. The author paints a compelling portrait of Roman deceit and corruption. Adding to the book's richness is the historical background. Here, we get a picture of life under an oppressive regime. The author gives readers a taste of Rome's bloody history of oppression and cruelty.

The action is page-turning and the turbulent history of Rome as invader and brutal occupier comes alive within the fictional tale. Readers may recognize the never ending pursuit of power and wealth with no regard for innocent lives lost. Readers will also identify with the historical struggles of that time period as it relates to today's conflicts. I highly recommend the book to readers who enjoy entertaining and engaging historical fiction.
