IMINENT specializes in developing value added entertainment services for IM.
Its flagship service, EMOVIDS, is working both with Windows Live Messenger© & Yahoo! Messenger©, and allows IM users to communicate through video messages without leaving their main IM software. (cf. http://www.iminent.com)
Between September, 18th and September 19th, IMINENT services reached their one millionth IM user ID from services such as EMOVIDS or CHAPTERS.
"The most exciting part is that with one million, we have barely scratched the surface, as the latest studies mention about 700 million IM users worldwide," said Francis Cohen, IMINENT CEO.
Thanks to its positioning next to all IM software and the number of its users, IMINENT is able to paint quite an interesting picture of IM usage as a communication tool among teenagers.
- IM heavy users (the population representative of IMINENT services) send about 300 messages a day, spending an average of over 1 Hour and a half per day actively on IM
("being active on IM" defined as "being engaged in a conversation during the last 2 minutes")
"We knew IM was a huge hit among teenagers, but we didn't expect such impressive numbers from relatively mainstream users" acknowledges Marc Moulin Roussel, IMINENT VP Marketing.
"One way or another, even though they are multi-tasking, there must be some arbitrage going on with other activities, such as TV, Videogames, online surfing, SMS, or phone conversation" he adds.
- Some heavy users even log up to 8 hours straight typing marathons, with no interruption longer than 3 minutes.
"There is no doubt that, as with many things, IM usage can turn into an addiction" Francis COHEN estimates. "We are considering adding messages to our services that would pop up every thirty minutes or so to advise IM users to go out and get some fresh air, as you can see with some videogames".
- Another striking feature is that the average IM user on IMINENT has 100 buddies.
"You have to understand how this thing works: The number of buddies you have is somewhat representing how cool you are in this environment. So the game here is to establish contacts with as many friends as possible in order to expand your network" says Francis Cohen. "The side impact of this perpetual quest to add buddies to your list is that the "six degrees theory" where each individual is linked to another through a 6 degree chain might be more something like a "4 or 5 degrees theory" on IM. As a result, innovation, services, and information spread even faster on IM than on the rest of the Internet".
