Winston-Salem, NC (PRWEB) September 24, 2007 -– Already gearing up for the winter ski season? Take it from the ski professionals –- wearing base layer is a must. In a recent survey, more than nine out of 10 ski instructors say they wear base layer to keep warm when temperatures start to drop. And, 14 percent of those surveyed report wearing base layer with its moisture-wicking characteristics as a year-round staple.
Heading into the winter season, Duofold, maker of performance base layer, polled more than 4,200 ski instructors in partnership with the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA), about staying warm both on and off the slopes.
“Base layer is one of the most versatile and hardest working pieces in my gear bag,” said Jeb Boyd, PSIA Alpine Team Member and Director of Arc2Arc Alpine Training Center. “It keeps your core warm while also wicking away moisture so you stay dry. I wear it each time I hit the slopes, and for any outdoor activity when temperatures are going to be chilly.”
In the survey, an overwhelming 93 percent of respondents report wearing base layer to keep warm, and 90 percent say wearing base layer is very important/important when enjoying the outdoors. In addition to wearing base layer for high-energy snow sports such as skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing, respondents say they also wear base layer for activities such as hiking, camping and bicycling as well as more static activities such as spectating at fall and winter sporting events. While the majority of respondents, 78 percent, say they wear base layer primarily in cold weather, 14 percent report wearing base layer year-round.
“Who knows more about staying warm this upcoming ski season than the men and women who spend countless hours on the slopes as professional ski instructors,” said Don Burton, director of marketing for Duofold. “The survey is a great opportunity to learn how the professionals gear up for every kind of snow activity and weather condition.”
Base layer styles, most often a crew or turtleneck top along with close-fitting bottoms, typically feature technical performance fibers that not only provide exceptional warmth but also help move moisture away from the skin. Close to 25 percent of the survey respondents rank wicking technology that moves moisture away from the skin and keeps them warm as their top performance feature. Many base layer manufacturers like Duofold offer a variety of fabric options designed for specific activities and weather conditions.
“Knowing the conditions before heading out is not only important for maximizing comfort and enjoyment, but also for personal safety,” said Boyd. “The most fundamental safety precaution you can take is dressing for the elements, whether that means extreme cold, high winds or a chance of precipitation –- your gear has got to keep you both warm and dry.”
From snow-sports equipment to apparel, members of PSIA are often asked for product recommendations out on the slopes. More than 50 percent report being asked for advice at least a couple times a week. Fortunately, more than 79 percent of respondents say they feel informed on the latest technology out in the market, and they are active consumers –- 48 percent of respondents report buying new base layer pieces at least once a year. Their top two choices in base layer are Patagonia and Duofold.
“We are very pleased to be the brand of choice for the members of PSIA,” said Burton. “They are exceptionally knowledgeable about the importance of wearing base layer for all types of outdoor activities and conditions. Through them, we hope more outdoor enthusiasts will become aware of the importance of wearing base layer so they can stay warm and safe this ski season.”
