To save money and cut energy usage, it's best to focus on switching to CFLs in those locations first

October is Energy Awareness Month. To help consumers improve their home's energy efficiency, Bellacor, the largest online retailer of lighting and home accessories, offers energy saving tips and suggestions to use all year long. And, to make it easy to select energy-conscious and green alternatives for the home, Bellacor now provides a "Go Green" section on its website.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting consumes about 22% of the total electricity generated in the United States. One of the simplest ways to conserve energy is to switch over to ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs (compact fluorescent lighting.) According to the EPA, they use 75% less energy than standard incandescent bulbs, last 10 times longer and produce 75% less heat, so they also help hold down home cooling costs.

Lights that are used most frequently and for longer stretches of time are best for CFLs. The five most used lights are usually those in the family room, kitchen and dining room, bedroom and outdoors. "To save money and cut energy usage, it's best to focus on switching to CFLs in those locations first," says Chris Fowler, senior marketing manager for Bellacor. "But every family's different -- lights might be on longer in your laundry room or home office, so Bellacor has ENERGY STAR qualified fixtures for every room in the house."

ENERGY STAR products meet strict consumer product energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and US Department of Energy. By choosing ENERGY STAR rated fixtures, homeowners can save one quarter the energy of traditional lighting. "These fixtures are designed around the light source so they make the best use of all the light produced," says Fowler. "And because Bellacor's selection of decorative styles and designs are every bit as beautiful as regular fixtures, choosing to be energy efficient is win-win."

Bellacor also recommends using dimmer switches, automatic timers, motion detectors and photocells to regulate energy consumption. Sometimes just matching the right fixture to the task will make a difference on your electric bill. It wastes energy and money to over-light a whole room instead of using more efficient, task-specific lighting.

But energy efficient lighting isn't the only way Bellacor's products help you lower your energy costs. Installing a ceiling fan/light combination can also reduce your heating and cooling bills. In the summer, use the ceiling fan in a counter-clockwise direction to increase air circulation and create a cool breeze. In the winter, reverse the motor to force warmer air from the ceiling down to the occupied space. Bellacor offers ENERGY STAR model fan/light combinations which are about 50% more efficient than conventional units and come in many styles and finishes to enhance your home's beauty.

Bellacor is committed to helping consumers save energy, preserve the environment, save money, and still live in comfort and style. That commitment is reflected in their "Go Green" web pages which give shoppers a quick and easy way to find products to make their homes healthier and more energy efficient, all year long.

Cited as one of the top 50 web retail sites by Internet Retailer, Bellacor offers the largest collection of lighting and home furnishings online, with access to over 500,000 products from 700 manufacturers.
