Facial peels are one of the most sophisticated skincare procedures on the market. From micro-dermabrasion to glycolic acid facials, Skincare-News.com's latest article, "The Appeal of Peels," explains both spa peels and their at-home cousins.

What exactly is a facial peel? Typically composed of either an organic substance such as sodium chloride, or a chemical like glycolic acid, facial peels are super-exfoliating. They lift off, or dissolve the top-layer of skin in order to reveal the new, healthy and ideally--unwrinkled--skin beneath. High-intensity peels can help rejuvenate skin that has lost vitality due to overexposure to the sun, pollution or even just normal intrinsic aging.
Skin damage from prolonged exposure to the sun or elements will require a more aggressive peel in order to see results. Before trying any type of peel, speak with a qualified esthetician or a doctor.
Facial peels can be classified into three different types: light, medium and deep.
Light peels are typically used to treat less severe skin problems, such as sunspots, dry skin, fine lines and wrinkles, or acne scarring. These can usually be done more frequently because they are less harsh on the skin, and the effects are usually mild. Typically, these peels are fruit acids or alpha-hydroxy acids such as glycolic or lactic.
Medium peels have a higher percentage of active ingredients, so the after-effects tend to be more visible. Redness, not unlike severe sunburn, may last a week or more and the skin can also peel or flake during recovery. Medium peels are often the chemical trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and are used to treat deeper wrinkles and more severe sun damage. Typically, a peel of this intensity is performed every two years or so, with results lasting anywhere from 6 months to a year.
Deep peels are typically made from a chemical called phenol. A peel of this intensity treats deep wrinkles, very dry or splotchy skin and even precancerous growths. Because of their strength, great care must be taken in evaluating the individual beforehand to ensure that he or she is an appropriate candidate for this procedure.
At-Home Peels vs. In-Office: Facial peels that can be purchased at a beauty store are much milder than their in-spa brethren as they typically have a much lower concentration of active ingredients. However, that does not mean they aren't beneficial. The convenience of doing a peel at home, the mild after-effects, and the reasonable cost makes this an attractive option for anyone looking to rejuvenate their skin.
Facial peels are a sophisticated boost for overall skin health, vitality and longevity, and will benefit all skin types, tones, concerns and ages. But be smart: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Never cut corners on ingredients or quality and only use a peel that comes from a questionable source.
