National Express, Moovera Expand in-vehicle Commuter Wi-Fi Services

Broadband Internet access now available for passengers between Milton Keynes and London Canary Wharf.

Moovera Networks, a leading developer of fixed and mobile wireless broadband technology, and National Express, the UK's largest scheduled coach travel company, have announced the expansion of on-board Wi-Fi Internet services to additional routes following the success of earlier deployments between London and Cambridge. The latest route to be upgraded for Wi-Fi access is the popular commuter service between the city of Milton Keynes and the heart of London's business district in Canary Wharf. National Express have deployed Moovera's Moovbox M Series mobile broadband gateway that provides Wi-Fi access to passengers, connecting to the Internet over cellular data networks.

National Express has selected Vodafone UK as the mobile data service provider for the deployment, taking advantage of Vodafone's next-generation 3G network that utilizes HSDPA (High Speed Download Packet Access) for download speeds up to 3.6Mbps.

The new Wi-Fi service is the latest feature for National Express's fleet of business-class luxury coaches equipped with air conditioning, leather sheets, free newspapers and 240V power sockets for laptops. "The Milton Keynes to London route is particularly popular with business commuters," said Cathryn Jeeves, Project Manager at National Express. "The journey takes a little over two hours, and we want to deliver services that enable our customers to make best use of their time. Internet access at broadband speeds is a natural choice and the success of our initial Moovbox Wi-Fi installations between Cambridge and London proved the concept. Moovera's experience with delivering robust and reliable mobile broadband technology meant they were the right partner for our expansion to further routes."

The Moovbox M Series mobile broadband gateway provides a bridge between Wi-Fi access and carrier networks including 3G UMTS/HSPA, WiMAX and TD-CDMA and features built-in GPS. Moovbox also offers secure Ethernet for in-vehicle systems such as IP-CCTV, DVR and telematics equipment. Using the Moovbox gateway, fleet operators have remote in-bound access to their vehicles' systems while in motion.
