M5T Introduces its Secure STUN Server
New STUN Server further enhances the M5T product portfolio of telecommunications solutions
Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada (PRWEB) October 17, 2007 -- M5T, the leading provider of software solutions for secure real-time multimedia communications over IP, today announced the release of its new Secure STUN Server.
A STUN (Simple Traversal of User Datagram Protocol (UDP) Through Network Address Translators (NATs) server allows NAT clients (i.e. computers behind a firewall) to setup phone calls to a VoIP provider hosted outside of the local network.
The STUN server allows clients to find out their public address, the type of NAT they are behind and the internet side port associated by the NAT with a particular local port. This information is used to set up UDP communication between the client and the VoIP provider and so establish a call. The STUN protocol is defined in RFC 3489.
"Firewalls can often prevent SIP from interfacing properly with SIP devices on the far side of the wall," explained Pascal Doré, Product Manager for M5T. "To enable incoming SIP and media packets to traverse firewalls, a STUN server is required to allow the SIP stack to obtain its mapped port and IP address and notify the SIP registrar, SIP proxy, or SIP end-user of these values." Furthermore, M5T STUN server can be part of a more comprehensive solution when coupled with M5T ICE. ICE use STUN server to gather its list of reachable IP addresses and thus, enhance the ability of media to go through NAT & Firewalls.
