When Chris McCabe travels to an alternate dimension to impersonate ranking nobleman Duke Christian Lattimore, in an attempt to prevent the duke's untimely death, the last thing he expects is to be greeted by the duke's corpse. The action-packed adventure that follows features a highly original story of magic, love and intrigue in Debra Killeen's young adult fantasy novel, "An Unlikely Duke" (ISBN 9780979232831, Helm Publishing, 2007).
"An Unlikely Duke" takes place within the enchanting world of Myrridia, an alternate reality that resembles medieval Europe, where magic is real, but held within the Church's strict control. In Myrridia, is it essential that Duke Lattimore's murder remain a secret, because serious ramifications would result if the public knew he was assassinated. So, when Chris McCabe arrives, he must act quickly to convincingly impersonate the Duke, while tracking down the malevolent murderers.
While carrying out the acting job of his life, Chris begins the search for clues to the Duke's murder, an investigation that turns up danger, magic and the most unlikely of friendships. The Duke's fresh corpse isn't the only surprise in store for Chris, however. He is also startled by the Duke's widow, Helen--who is equally astonished at Chris' presence, as well. The love story within "An Unlikely Duke" holds a nugget of wisdom inside, stressing the importance of not judging a person by his or her appearance.
"An Unlikely Duke" also carries a strong cast of supporting characters, including teenagers Allyson and Prince Robert, heir to Myrridia's throne. In the spirit of "The Prince and the Pauper," Killeen tosses some classic laughs into the story, because although Chris may be identical to the Duke on the outside, their similarities are only skin deep, and some of Chris' very un-Duke-like behavior does not go unnoticed by the other characters.
When Chris' mission is completed he must make the most difficult choice of all--should he stay in Myrridia or return home to his own world? While the answer lies only in the book's final pages, readers can presume that in the captivating world of Myrridia, all one can expect, is the unexpected.
