FireFly Farms (http://www.fireflyfarms.com), producer of artisan goat cheeses from Maryland's Allegheny plateau, proudly announces five of their aged cheeses earned medals at the 2007 American Dairy Goat Association (http://www.adga.org) competition recently held in Ft. Collins, Colorado. In addition to two bronze medals and three gold medals, FireFly Farms Bella Vita™ earned "Reserve Best in Show."
"We are ecstatic," shared Matt Cedro, FireFly's head cheese maker. "We are so proud of all of our cheeses, but to have a cheese recognized as 'Best in Show' is a phenomenal validation of our hard work! Artisan cheese is growing rapidly in the United States, and we are pleased to remain competitive with all the wonderful goat creameries."
In addition to "Reserve Best in Show," Bella Vita earned a gold medal in the Italian-style category. This rustic cheese is aged for several months before it leaves us, and it can continue maturing for up to a full year. Its sharp nutty flavor and distinct texture allow for versatility on a cheese board or in fine cooking where it grates and melts beautifully.
FireFly Farms earned four other ADGA show medals. Merry Goat Round™ earned a bronze medal in the soft-ripened category. Soft-ripened with a white bloomy rind as it matures, this cheese develops creamier "mushroomy" notes. Mountain Top Blue™ and Black & Blue™ earned gold and bronze medals respectively in the blue veined category. "There are very few 100% goat milk blue cheeses," adds Dan Porter, FireFly Farms's assistant cheese maker. We believe that we are making two of the most unique cheeses in the country." Cabra LaMancha™ was the fourth cheese to earn a gold medal at the competition in the aged-cheese category. It is a rustic, goat's milk tome with a washed rind.
