Edmonton, Alberta resident Katherine Brown is one step closer to fulfilling her dream of creating a better tomorrow for her community. Ms. Brown was named one of six winners of the Avon Hello Tomorrow Fund, a $5,000 cash award program from Avon Canada, Inc. to support individuals in their work to empower women. Over 1,000 applications were submitted from across the country. Entries were required to present unique and achievable objectives to empower women or girls and ultimately improve society through breast cancer community service, awareness, or outreach programs.
Ms. Brown will apply the award to her "CommuniCancer" web site where people newly diagnosed with cancer can connect to others in a similar situation and to cancer survivors. Ms. Brown created the site when her mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, and went looking for an online resource to help her cope. Says Ms. Brown, "I was shocked that this resource did not exist. I imagined a web site where patients who became survivors could inspire others with their journey, and where healing could be facilitated through community and communication."
Ms. Brown spent over a year creating http://www.CommuniCancer.com as a free resource for patients, survivors, and their friends and family. The Avon Hello Tomorrow Fund will help CommuniCancer grow and raise awareness about its existence.
Winning entries were chosen by an expert panel of judges, including Ms. Nicola Lewis - Executive Director, Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance (CBCRA); Ms. Tina Whitman - Breast Cancer Survivor; Ms. Patricia Robinson - Partner, Goodmans LLP and Secretary; Avon Flame Foundation; Mr. Scott Schlackman - President, Avon Canada; and Ms. Roberta Lacey - Director of Communications, Avon Canada.
Ms. Lewis said that she was touched by the caring and creativity expressed in the applications, "It is so inspiring to see the many creative ways people have of helping each other. I am sure that these initiatives will touch many lives and make a real difference."
"The Hello Tomorrow Fund is part of Avon's ongoing commitment to empowering women," said Scott Schlackman, President of Avon Canada Inc. "The incredible projects we've chosen as winners are certain to have a powerful impact on entire communities. We're incredibly proud to be able to help keep these positive initiatives active across the country."
