Struise Mikkeller, an intense and colorful interpretation of the Indian Pale Ale style, is now finding its not so quiet spot on the shelves at select American beer retailers. This single batch beer is the second in a series requested of the world's best master brewers by the beer aficionados at internet craft beer authority, RateBeer.com.
"It's the product of a creative partnership between De Struise Brouwers of Belgium and the Mikkeller Brewery of Denmark," explains Joseph Tucker, Executive Director at RateBeer. "To people who love beer this is a monster event. It's as if you held something like Top Chef and then had two of the top performers suddenly shake hands and then whip up something together that just blows you away."
Both brewers have been well received by international beer aficionados, with both rising to some of the top spots of RateBeer's list of over 72,000 world beers compiled from more than 1.36 million beer ratings. The brewers' beers have been traded and shipped overseas and enthusiastic tasters now span the globe. Their work represents the creative vanguard of craft beer in Europe, eschewing local tradition and sometimes locally favorite styles and ingredients for new and extreme flavors and varieties.
De Struise Brouwers is surprisingly not a commercial brewery in the traditional sense at all. It's an amateur collective of beer brewing friends commonly known by their first names -- Urbain, Carlo, Phil and Pete. Their entire line of beers including the top rated Pannepot and now Pannepot Grand Reserva, were brewed at commercial brewing facilities from their Struise recipes and then bottled and readied for worldwide distribution. Struise currently holds three spots in the top 25 of RateBeer's list of the top rated beers in the world.
Mikkeller is Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and Kristian Klarup Keller. The duo was named Brewer Of The Year 2006 by the Danish Beer Enthusiasts and took the number five spot in RateBeer's list of the world's best brewers the same year. Mikkeller now boasts three spots in RateBeer's current list of the top 50 beers. Their brews are often rich, complex and sometimes challenging and color outside the lines of brewing tradition and accepted styles.
Mikkeller also doesn't own a brewing facility and takes a very non traditional approach to brewing -- they choose a brewing facility based on the desired characteristics of the beer they're brewing.
Consumers can purchase the beer online from retailers like Liquid Solutions. http://www.liquidsolutions.biz/
Mikkeller and Struise Brouwers beers are available to distributors in limited supply through their American importer Shelton Brothers, of Belchertown, Massachussetts.
