Capella University Launches Gerontology Specialization within its MS in Human Services Online Degree Program

Specialization is designed to address shortage of professionals with gerontology skills

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) November 2, 2007 -- Capella University (capella.edu), an accredited*, fully online university based in Minneapolis, announced today that it is offering a new Gerontology specialization within its Master of Science in Human Services online degree program. The curriculum was designed around the recommendations of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE).

Numerous health and human service professions are already experiencing a shortage of workers with skills and experience in caring for older adults. With the number of people ages 65 and older expected to double in the next few decades, according to the U.S. Administration on Aging, the demand for gerontology skills will become even more acute.

The aging of the population creates opportunities and challenges in many health and human service fields
"The aging of the population creates opportunities and challenges in many health and human service fields," said Suzanne Holmes, DPA, public health program chair for Capella's School of Human Services. "Working with an older population requires special skills, including an understanding of biological, epidemiological, social, and psychological issues related to aging, and the care and services that can promote productive aging. Our curriculum is designed to help professionals from a wide range of occupations develop the skills they need to work with an aging population."

Capella is now accepting enrollment applications for its MS in Human Services, Gerontology specialization. For more information, please call 1.888.CAPELLA (227.3552), option 3, or e-mail info@capella.edu. Review of this specialization is pending in AZ, FL, KY, OH, SC, and WA. Contact an enrollment counselor for additional information.
