Skincare Confusion: Skin Care and Scalp Acne
Skincare-News.com discusses scalp folliculitis, a skin condition that can mimic acne by producing white heads and blemish-like bumps on the scalp and hairline.
Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) November 5, 2007 -- Although scalp folliculitis isn't technically acne, the symptoms and treatment are usually similar. Skincare-News.com's latest article, "FYI: Scalp Folliculitis" helps readers know what to look for when it comes to treating this pesky condition.

Mild forms can be treated with skincare products most people already own. Oftentimes, folliculitis may heal its own. On the other hand, severe cases of folliculitis are medical conditions that can lead to hardened, red bumps and this must be treated medically.
So what causes folliculitis? Damage to the hair follicle is thought to be the primary reason. Once compromised, bacteria or fungus invade the damaged follicle and cause trouble. Common offenders include: restrictive clothing or hats, harsh chemicals and solvents, aggressive shaving, excessive perspiration, and even exposure to heat and humidity, such as a sauna, whirlpool or improperly chlorinated pool. An excessively oily scalp can also exacerbate the condition.
Because this condition is highly contagious, managing and treating all cases of scalp folliculitis is vitally important. To avoid spreading the disease during any stage of an active breakout, always use clean, dry towels when bathing or swimming and never share towels, combs, brushes, or other hair accessories. If symptoms don't improve within three or four days, or the outbreaks worsen, seek medical attention as this disease can lead to scarring or hair loss.
To get the scalp into shape, start with the basics. Keep the area clean and as free from oil as possible. Also, for those visible bumps along the hairline, apply a salicylic acid treatment to the area with a cotton swab. And although benzoyl peroxide is an excellent treatment for acne, it is not excellent for hair: benzoyl peroxide may damage or cause a lightening of hair. Hair care products designed specifically for seborrhea are known to remedy scalp acne as well.
If left untreated, scalp folliculitis can become a serious skin condition. Severe forms include acne necrotica miliaris and perifolliculitis capitis. These are medical conditions that may require antibiotic treatment and no attempt should be made to treat any advanced form of folliculitis with over-the-counter products. Consult a doctor if unsure how to proceed with treatment.
