Kimberley & Co. President Gives Tips on Perfect Pencils

For artists and writers, choosing the perfect pencil isn't always the easiest task. Kimberley & Co. president Frank Mazza offers tips for choosing the perfect pencil.

Troy, Mich. (PRWEB) November 5, 2007 -- Many creative professionals spend hours with writing instruments in hand, yet choosing the perfect pencil isn't always the easiest task. Kimberley & Co. (http://www.kimberleyco.com) president Frank Mazza offers tips for choosing the perfect pencil.

"For more professional writing and art, the pencils you get in bulk from the store aren't going to cut it," Mazza said. "They're more cheaply made, which means they'll break easier, or gouge or rip the paper. If that happens, you've just ruined whatever you're working on, and that can send hours of work down the tubes."

According to Mazza, the quality of a pencil comes from the quality of its parts, from the wood outside to the graphite used inside. The best pencil wood is uniform and free of knots.

"Knots will catch when you're sharpening the pencil, and that'll cause it to break," Mazza said. "Wood that has no knots will sharpen smoothly and consistently."

The pencil lead, which is actually a combination of graphite and clay, should also have uniformity throughout. According to Mazza, the best graphite is finely crushed and blended so that it is smooth throughout.

"Everybody's had a pencil that's had inconsistencies in the lead that ended up scratching the paper while you were writing or drawing," Mazza said. "For a professional, a scratch like that can ruin a day's work. Perfectly blended graphite will give you a smooth, even stroke every time."

Mazza also said that the graphite core should be firmly bonded to the wood case, in order to prevent the lead from slipping out or breaking when sharpening. When choosing a pencil, he recommends going with a trusted brand like Faber-Castell that includes a built-in sharpener.
