Fashionista Dee Burton Offers Five Fashion Tips to Build Your Workout Wardrobe
No more excuses for wearing that grungy old tee to the gym--fitness Fashionista Dee Burton explains to dress for success at the gym.
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) November 29, 2007 -- You might think that working out is the perfect excuse for slacking off in the style department. That's SO not true, says professional trainer Dee Burton, founder of online fitness apparel seller www.deezfit.com.
"When you go to the gym or studio and you know you look good, you'll have a better workout. I see it every day when I'm teaching. Wear old, grungy, slouchy, please-don't-look-at-me stuff, and that's the image you have of yourself - dumpy and worn out. Not very motivating! On the other hand, if you're wearing something that's comfortable in a good way - cool, moisture wicking, supportive and with some style to give you a little lift - then you enjoy your workouts much more. It enhances your self-image. And that helps motivate you to go to the gym more often and work harder."
Dee points out that not since Jane Fonda exhorted us to "feel the burn" in legwarmers and belted leotards have there been so many fun - and functional - options in fitness fashion. So where do you begin in building a wardrobe that helps you build a more fit body? Here are Dee's tips:
1. Buy apparel that is as sport specific as possible. If you do yoga, try loose fitting, comfortable clothes that enhances flowing movement. If you are doing aerobics, then something with support and a touch of compression is probably better.
2. Seasonality plays a role in fitness as well as fashion. Just because you work out indoors you still need to take into account what the temp is like outdoors. If you live in a cold weather climate give yourself time to acclimate as your workout begins or wear layers so you can peel or add as necessary. If you live in a warm weather climate, keep in mind that it might be colder inside. Once again, wear layers.
3. Fitness fashions change as fast as lifestyle fashions. That old headband, pair of leggings and torn tank top may have been acceptable in the 1980's but today it's capris for the summer and a cozy zip top to keep you warm in the winter.
4. While serving no real functional benefit indoors, colors actually have a functional benefit while exercising outside. Dark colors absorb the warmth of the sun and lighter colors ward off some of those heat rays to keep you cooler. And if "cooler" is what you want from a style perspective, wear dark chocolate instead of black this winter. The fitness fashionistas will give you props.
5. Buy high quality fitness apparel. It will be both more fashionable and functional. Technical fabrics can significantly improve your workout by keeping you properly supported, cool and comfortable. The new moisture management fabrics offer great wicking properties to keep you dry as well. Many of the new fabrics have odor control systems and can take the punishment of hundreds of washings. Keep in mind that the dryer is another story however. Remember to airdry performance fabrics ALL THE TIME. Even one ill-fated trip in a hot dryer can fry all the performance your fancy fitness fashions have to offer.
