International Success for Open Source BI Made in Germany
The Palo User Conference 2007 indicates growing interest in Business
Intelligence on the basis of Open Source. The international audience was informed on the latest Palo developments and was presented success stories of the in-memory OLAP database developed in Germany.
Freiburg (PRWEB) November 19, 2007 -- Open Source solutions for Business Intelligence (BI) increasingly take root as alternatives to commercial solutions. This trend has been confirmed by the 1-day Palo User Conference 2007 that was organised by Jedox: Palo users from Germany, France, Great Britain, Spain, U.S.A., Canada and even Australia received first-hand information on current developments of the Palo Server and the scope of the applications for Business Intelligence and Performance Management.
"As swiftly as grand generalists - among them IBM, SAP and Oracle - buy up the commercial vendors on the BI market, Open Source-BI is being recognized as a real alternative - not only to curb costs but mostly to reduce risk and to have better security for investments in BI projects. This is one of the explanations for the increasing interest in the Palo User Conference; compared to the previous year, attendance has quadrupled," Kristian Raue, CEO of Jedox, comments. Jedox is not only the developer of Palo but provides extensive support and services for the in-memory OLAP database as well.
One of the agenda items at this year's conference was the Palo based scorecard application implemented at Nycomed Deutschland GmbH (formerly ALTANA Pharma). A representative of the Government of Alberta, Ministry for Sustainable Resource Development, explained how Palo calculates forestry key figures and analyses of the Province of Alberta. Jedox provided information on technology and the upcoming roadmap of the in-memory OLAP database and also announced the Palo ETL Server - a new development, the purpose of which is the import of data into Palo from third-party systems. Furthermore, the conference included a preview of the new ODBO- and XMLA-driver which enables ODBO-enabled clients or XML-based web service consumers to access Palo data.
Christian Schieder of the Chemnitz University of Technology introduced the PalOOCa project. This acronym stands for the far-advanced integration of Palo in OpenOffice.org Calc. As an example for the good interaction between open and non-open source software served the Palo integration in Abacus, a successful ERP software with over 30,000 medium-sized customers.
