NetModo Inc. Opens Free News Archive to the Public -- Launches Newsmodo.com With Over 3.5 Million Newspaper Articles

NetModo Inc., a web-publishing venture aimed at providing free content to consumers, launched their initial Web site http://www.NewsModo.com with over 3.5 million news articles from 85 newspapers across the country in partnership with Media News Group Interactive. The website, a product of Denver based Internet entrepreneur and MapQuest.com veteran Bill Sedgwick and co-founder John Carpenter, changes the way news content can be accessed by opening it up to all major search engines without charging for content on a pay-per-view basis.

The website, a product of Denver based Internet entrepreneur and MapQuest.com veteran Bill Sedgwick and co-founder John Carpenter, changes the way news content can be accessed by opening it up to all major search engines without charging for content on a pay-per-view basis.

"Our premise is that a huge volume of high quality content is enormously undervalued and hard to find. Most newspaper content today is only published for a fairly short period of time and then removed from the web and placed behind a "pay-per-view" model. Newsmodo.com changes that, and makes a huge news archive available for free to any consumer, anywhere in the world," stated Sedgwick, the venture's CEO. The initial archive goes back approximately 10 years.

An example of undervalued content now being delivered by NewsModo would include a Travel section article about the Bahamas that was published in the local Sunday paper and also hosted for a couple of weeks on the Paper's website. This would have exposed the well written article from a respected journalist to a very limited audience over a short period of time, when the article would actually be valuable for several years to anyone in the world that is traveling to the Bahamas. By making the article available to a worldwide audience for free, the opportunity for the newspaper to extract value from it never ceases.

"Considering Wikipedia announced its 2 Millionth piece of content recently to much fanfare, we feel that the 3.5 Million pieces contained in the Newsmodo.com site is a
fantastic start, and is really only the beginning" stated Carpenter, co-founder. He added, "We have high hopes of being able to generate value from content that has been largely forgotten or under-distributed, both for consumers and for our publishing partners."

The content delivered on the Newsmodo.com website will be supported with advertising that is contextually relevant to the article being viewed by the consumer. The value of this type of advertising both to advertisers and to consumers is well established. "There is so much "garbage" advertising online that is annoying and irrelevant to consumers, that we are making a pledge: We will endeavor to ONLY display ads that are relevant to our site visitors. This may take away some near term revenue opportunities, but we feel that in order to build a loyal audience to our network of websites, that we must ensure a useful, clean and relevant consumer experience," added Sedgwick. To this end, NetModo is testing Google's AdSense product and Yahoo!'s Content Match product and has integrated Kontera, an in-line ad network. As traffic to the site increases, NetModo will sell advertising direclty to relevant marketers.

NetModo customized its user friendly search engine so that searchers on Newsmodo.com can sort their searches not only by keywords or phrases, but also by date range, author or publication. The website is also created so that mainstream search engines such as Google and Yahoo! will return Newsmodo.com results when consumers search their sites, though it will take some time for the search engines to fully index and accurately rank the content from NewsModo.com. Soon, NewsModo will include content sharing features, RSS options and consumer interaction tools that will increase the content's value over time and provide new ways for it to be distributed.

NewsModo.com is also a "safe" search environment. Because NewsModo only publishes professionally produced content and does not "crawl the web" for content, parents and kids can be assured that a search on Newsmodo.com will only return content that has been published in a newspaper previously. This essentially eliminates the threat that some type of questionable photos or other unwelcome content will be displayed to unsuspecting eyes while perusing search results and articles on the site.
