November 2007, Denver, Colorado - At the outbreak of the Second World War, 800,000 children in Britain are relocated in an effort to protect them from impending danger. For twelve-year-old Joe Anderson, the journey takes him to the tiny coastal village of Rockcliffe in southwest Scotland. Amid the backdrop of a country gripped by fear, one child's world becomes a mix of fantasy and reality. With his new friends and an old sea captain, Cap'n Bee, Joe's days are filled with stories of war and graveyard ghosts, adventures in sea caves, and a dangerous search for German spies and smugglers. Then one day Joe and his friends find a live bomb buried in the mud.

Excerpt from Rockcliffe:
"What do we do with it?" Harry asked.
"Wash all the mud off, mates. We're taking this bomb back with us. I'll carry it in my rucksack… Got to be almost twenty pounds," said Joe. David and Alastair helped Joe tug the rucksack up onto his back; then the boys started off on their two-mile trek to the shore.
"Look!" shouted Joe, pointing to the sea. His mouth was suddenly dry and his heart began to pound. "The tide is coming in! We've been out here too long!"

Rockcliffe was inspired by the true life story of author Sandra Anderson's husband Joe, who was one of the thousands of British school children sent away for safekeeping. Sandra was born in the United States, but spent many years abroad before meeting Joe, from Glasgow, Scotland. His story so inspired her that she knew one day she must commit it to print. Rockcliffe is dedicated to Sandra and Joe's grandchildren, who Sandra says, "inspire me to reach for the stars--laughing all the way!" In 2007, Joe Anderson will celebrate his 80th birthday, with his children and grandchildren, at the place where this exciting story began--Rockcliffe.
