Futures Expeditions: The BRIC Countries

Share Article

Join the futurists at the global research and consulting firm Social Technologies for a sweep of four international hotspots - Brazil, Russia, India, and China - where the future is happening now.

Wish you could visit some of the world's most dynamic emerging markets with a futurist as your guide?

The opportunity has arrived, for on February 29 to March 4, 2008, senior analysts from the futurist research and consulting firm Social Technologies are taking leaders from the Fortune 1000 on a tour through Hyderabad, India.

Why Hyderabad?

"With a population of more than 6 million, Hyderabad is the sixth largest metropolitan area in India," explains Natalie Ambrose, leader of Social Technologies' Futures Expedition program. "It is known as the geographic, linguistic, political, and religious meeting point between northern and southern India."

Thereafter, Ambrose will lead expeditions to Moscow, Russia (Sept. 24--30, 2008), Curitiba, Brazil (March 5--10, 2009), and Shanghai, China (Oct. 15--20, 2009).

Each expedition will be customized to spotlight the trends most pertinent to each country and to the attendees, Ambrose adds.

"A big part of the BRIC Expeditions will be immersing ourselves in the daily life of these markets so we get a better sense of how important issues like urbanization, environmental concerns, rising income, and changing consumption patterns are actually playing out for consumers and businesses," Ambrose notes. "This means in-depth interaction (e.g., home visits, shadow shopping, focus groups), and engaging with experts who truly understand where these countries are headed."

Experience the future

Home visits are perhaps the most exciting part of the adventure, Ambrose believes. "To actually visit the home of a family in India---and in Moscow, Curitiba, or Shanghai---provides business leaders with unparalleled insight into how the people of that cutting-edge city live, think, eat, and perceive the world," she says.

Other stops on the tour will include onsite meetings with experts, NGO leaders, and corporate professionals. Each day of the tour will end with a synthesis and discussion session to help expedition participants crystallize the business implications of what they are witnessing.

Who should attend?

Participation is particularly pertinent for professionals whose roles include foresight, trend and consumer insight analysis, marketing research, brand management, product development, and innovation/ strategy development, says Ambrose.

Social Technologies' Director of Development Don Abraham agrees. "We have conducted several Futures Expeditions in the past, most recently to Shanghai last May, and consistently participants tell us that the experience was unlike any other they have had in their careers. Not only did touring an emerging market help them gain insight into that country---it opened their eyes and imaginations to other ideas that they then shared with their companies. I believe the Futures Expeditions are one of the most exciting, invigorating, and important programs that we offer."
