The easiest and most popular HRA plan design many employers choose is the Comprehensive HRA. With a Comprehensive HRA the employer simply designates a specific amount of monthly benefits, say $150, $200 or more. Employees turn in receipts each month to claim that money for qualifying medical, dental, vision, or individual health insurance premium. Unused amounts can accumulate until needed.
Another way employers use the HRA is in conjunction with a High Deductible Health Plan. This design allows a group to increase their standard deductible from $500.00 to $2,500.00 or more. Technically the employer is taking advantage of the lower premium and self-insuring a portion of the deductible expense.
