Chris Johnson's love of saké is rooted in early days as an English instructor in Japan where he was indoctrinated into saké culture while being immersed in Japanese culture. Having established saké street credibility, Chris was invited to participate in the first International Saké Sommelier Competition where he took third place and astonished the Japanese saké community. The recognition brought him a request to be a judge at the U.S. National Saké Appraisals in Hawaii, a role he has repeated for four years. In 2006 Chris was asked to return to Japan for the annual International Saké Sommelier Competition but this time as a judge.
