How does God want His children to handle bullies, stress, anger, frustration or jealousy? The world tells us to strike back with more of the same, but God asks much more of us. He asks us to follow the example of His Son and to live a life where we exhibit the fruits of His Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control. In Melita K. Hildahl's Life Is an Adventure with Ernie: Lessons for Children on How to Live by the Fruits of the Spirit (paperback, 978-1-60477-139-8), you will join Ernie Bunny, his family, and friends as they learn to make godly choices in their everyday life. Here are six stories complete with discussion questions and activities that parents and teachers can use to help children learn to apply Scripture to the challenges of everyday life.
Says Hildahl, "Society is teaching our children to put themselves first. It is robbing people of their godly inheritance of the fruits of the Spirit and causing millions of people to lead lives filled with depression and stress. Seeking God first and living by His ways and being led by the Holy Spirit will produce in us the life that God wants for us."
Written as a mother-daughter project, with Hildahl penning the book's text and her 14-year-old daughter Jenna providing the illustrations, the story of Life Is an Adventure with Ernie began four years ago. When the author was asked to teach character education to her elementary school students, a discussion emerged among her colleagues about how they could teach integrity in a public school setting without using Jesus as the ultimate example. As a result, God gave her these stories to use as a means for teaching the fruits of the Spirit to children.
