More Dollars for Opportunity
ACCC issues a grant for the Youth Development Organization, Inc.
Newton, MA (PRWEB) December 14, 2007 -- American Consumer Credit Counseling (ACCC), a non-profit organization, enhances financial literacy throughout the Greater Boston area with their Partnership for Advancement of Financial Literacy (P.A.L.) program. ACCC awards grants, through the P.A.L. program, to organizations that have joined the effort to support and promote financial literacy. Last Tuesday, ACCC Community Outreach Coordinator, Matthew Paradise, met with Katie Yang, program director and coordinator of the Youth Development Organization, to provide a $4,000 P.A.L. grant to the Dollars for Opportunity program.
The Youth Development Organization, Inc., a non-profit based out of Lawrence, MA, focuses on recruiting and preparing motivated students for high school and college achievement. They offer a variety of programs to students, ranging from academic enrichment and college awareness, to SAT prep courses and extracurricular activities. For college preparation, students receive assistance filling out college applications, applying for financial aid and taking measures to ensure their eligibility for financial aid. The organization would like to further its development by offering a financial literacy program that will help students plan for their education and teach them financial responsibility.
With the funds provided by ACCC, the Youth Development Organization (YDO) will be able to implement their new Dollars for Opportunity program in 2008. Through this program students will perform many of the operational tasks that are critical to the organization, such as: marketing, research, database development/maintenance, and student contact. They will receive a minimum wage payment for their work, and learn how to manage their earnings. This program will allow participants to save for an education, have money to spend and still have the ability to give some of their earnings to a charitable cause. Katie Yang commented, "We are excited to be working with ACCC and glad to be partners with such a community-involved organization." ACCC will also be providing financial literacy workshops to the Youth Development Organization, starting in early 2008.
