Child Safety Sense, launched winter 2006, opened its online store last month offering comprehensive child ID kits http://www.childsafetysense.com . "It's a great way to prepare for unforeseen circumstances that may arise while caring for children. Even our best efforts in watching over our young ones don't guarantee immunity from chance or deliberate occurrences of them going missing or lost," said Aimee Linde owner and co-founder of Child Safety Sense.
According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, more than 800,000 children were reported missing over the year 2000. "That's a lot of search parties where instant access of a child's photo or other identifying features would come in handy," said Linde. For whatever reason a child or even teenager becomes lost or missing, time is of the essence for locating that person. Having a kit ready with a child's identification (i.e. pictures, fingerprints, DNA) helps expedite a search more rapidly. That is where Child Safety Sense comes in. A child ID kit facilitates the collection of a child's personal information and identifying features (i.e. photograph, birthmarks, scars, tattoos, etc.) as well as fingerprinting and DNA collection and storage.
"While shopping for child ID kits for my own children, I was stunned to find that many kits didn't have the necessary information all in one place. Most wouldn't offer DNA collection and storage and those that did weren't adequate or were exorbitantly expensive. That was when I decided that it was a good idea to put my own kits together and offer them at a low price so that everyone could have a good kit for a reasonable price," explained Linde. "Every parent, guardian, and childcare provider should know that though ID kits are important, they are not a prevention tool in keeping kids from going missing. They are a reference tool for after the occurrence. They also provide a place to keep other vital information like allergies, blood type, and important phone numbers in case of medical emergencies," she continued.
While Child Safety Sense offers only ID kits at this time, the company plans for further expansion. "This is just phase one," said Aimee. "The name 'Child Safety Sense' means good safety sense for children. We have plans to offer other products, like first-aid kits, that focus on a child's safety in case of an emergency." Child Safety Sense currently is marketing to retailers of children's products, childcare facilities, home-schooling associations, and school fundraisers.
