On February second the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, announced to the world, or at least the northern hemisphere, that we should expect an early spring this year. So with spring on its way and spring cleaning just around the corner, now is a good time to consider vacuum cleaners. After throwing the doors and windows to the house open and beating out the dust of winter nobody wants an old or improperly maintained vacuum cleaner to weaken their cleaning efforts. When considering replacing a vacuum cleaner it can be a bit daunting trying to figure out which model is the best.

Here's a break down of the different styles and how they work.

• Upright vacuum cleaners - There's a reason this model has been around for so long. It's easy to use and, despite all of the technological breakthroughs that show up from time to time, the upright remains a perfectly acceptable machine for standard home use. Traditionally this type of cleaner has a pump mounted directly above the suction intake. The dust is disturbed from the carpet with brushes in the head then sucked into the machine. Uprights almost universally come with hose and brush attachments that can be used for more precise cleaning projects.

• Canister (or cylinder) vacuum cleaners - The canister model packs the motors and collection areas into one small, maneuverable body that typically comes with a wide variety of hoses and attachments for different uses. While the compact design necessarily sacrifices some power and suction, these units remain popular because they are often easier to store and carry. Some canister models come with power heads for carpet vacuuming. These power heads feature rotating brushes much like those in uprights.

• Wet vacs or wet/dry vacuums - The wet/dry vac is really just a specialized canister vacuum cleaner that can clean up wet messes. Wet/dry vacs are not the best for standard house hold cleaning but are perfect for large or shop area usage.

• Back-pack vacs - This style is almost exclusively for industrial use. The back-pack vacuum is basically a canister designed to be strapped to the users back and allows rapid cleaning of large areas.

• Robotic Cleaners - These cleaners might have been seen as mere novelties when they were introduced a few years ago but they are gaining popularity. They work automatically and independently. The little disk disembarks from its charging station and cleans the floor by covering the room in a particular pattern. Robotic cleaners do not use a vacuum suction; rather they lift the dirt and deposit it in a small onboard dust bin. When they are finished cleaning they return to their station to be recharged.

• Cyclonic Vacuum Cleaners - The upright cyclonic is the most recent innovation in vacuum cleaner technology. Cyclonic vacuum cleaners use centrifugal force to separate the dirt from the air. They also use a series of filters to clean the air before expelling it.
