Five New Power Wheelchairs Awarded During Roger Neal Concert Weekend
New Albany, IN (PRWEB) March 15, 2007 -- The SCOOTER Store, in partnership with the "Roger Neal and Friends Sing for MS Concert Series," is continuing its mission of using the concerts to help people living with disabilities across the country with a gift of mobility.
Thus far, during March performances in the concert series, folk gospel artist Roger Neal and the tour's sponsor, The SCOOTER Store, donated five power chairs, one at each concert, to people in need of mobility assistance. The power chairs, valued at $3,500 a piece, are among 53 being donated to people with disabilities.
"I am honored to be part of this effort with The SCOOTER Store," Mr. Neal said. "Not only have they joined us in raising money to help find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis so future generations do not have to live with this debilitating disease, the power chairs are bringing freedom and independence to people who are living with disabilities."
Mr. Neal announced the names of the recent recipients at the end of concert performances over the past two weekends in Mississippi, Arkansas, Ohio and Indiana.
Power chair recipients were: Allison Holloway, 37, March 1 at The Magnolia Center in Tupelo, MS; Jean Hardin, 73, March 2 at the Convention Center in Pine Bluff, AR; Vikie Arnold, March 3 at the Murrah High School Auditorium in Jackson, MS; Marcelino Ruiz, 28, of Cincinnati, March 8 at the Convention Center in Sharonville, OH; and Howard Klein, 49, of Clarksville, IN, March 9 at Graceland Baptist Church in New Albany, IN.
The donated power chairs were provided by The SCOOTER Store as part of its Gift of Mobility program, which provides mobility assistance and equipment to disabled citizens unable to obtain new power mobility equipment on their own or through insurance coverage.
"There are so many people throughout this country who have limited income and cannot afford to buy the medically necessary power mobility equipment they need to lead active lives," said Doug Harrison, CEO and founder of The SCOOTER Store. "We hope that this gift of freedom will be a life-changing experience for them."
The concert series, which resumes on April 13 with stops in Massachusetts, Maine, New York and West Virginia, is also donating a portion of the tour's proceeds to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. At each concert, Mr. Neal is joined by the biggest names in southern gospel and folk music, including The Hoppers, The Isaacs, Brian Free and Assurance, and Karen Peck. The concerts began February 8 in Savannah, Ga. and ends December 15 in St. Louis.
Mr. Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002. Since its inception, the outreach program has worked with organizations around the world to donate more than $200,000 a year in power wheelchairs and scooters and manual wheelchairs to community service organizations, enabling them to provide freedom, independence and personal integrity to individuals with limited mobility.
"It is our sincere desire to give them hope," Mr. Harrison said, referring to the recipients. "We want them to know that we care. Our wish is that we provide freedom and dignity so that they can more fully enjoy life."
