Amid Incomparable Views of Lake George and the Adirondack Mountains, The Sagamore's Golf Resort Guests Tee off on Historic Donald Ross Course

The Sagamore, the acclaimed private island resort on Lake George, is a well-known golf resort destination among serious golfers. Honored by Golf magazine as a "Silver Medal Resort" and rated a "Top U.S. Resort Course" by Condé Nast Traveler, The Sagamore's award-winning championship course is a storied and celebrated one. Bolton Landing, NY (PRWEB) April 10, 2007 -- The Sagamore, the acclaimed private island resort on Lake George, is a well-known golf resort destination among serious golfers. Honored by Golf magazine as a "Silver Medal Resort" and rated a "Top U.S. Resort Course" by Condé Nast Traveler, The Sagamore's award-winning championship course is a storied and celebrated one. It was designed by Donald Ross, America's first great golf course designer, and debuted in 1928. Prior to Ross, golf courses were viewed more as feats of engineering rather than works of art. Ross viewed courses in an entirely different way - he believed in designing courses with wide fairways, crowned greens and subtle contours formed from the existing lay of the land. He didn't believe in gimmicks, favoring a classic simplicity that honored the natural environment while challenging players at every skill level.

When the 18-hole, par-70 Sagamore Golf Course debuted, Ross's signature design elements that he used, such as hog-backed greens, cross bunkering and deep green-side bunkers, became the standard for golf courses in America. Because of this, he has been called the "patron saint of golf architecture." The golf resort was acclaimed as one of the best in the world and, over the years, the course has hosted the USGA Senior Open Qualifier, the USGA Mid-Am Qualifier for the Northeast region, and held many sectional championship events and tournaments with the Northeast New York Section of the PGA.

The Sagamore Golf Course is set on a ridge two and a half miles from the hotel overlooking Lake George and the Adirondack Mountains with a panorama of breathtaking views from every hole. Each hole is routed naturally through an upland meadow and the Adirondack woods, presenting a unique challenge to the golfer. Lush fairways are narrow and lined with hardwoods, while deep bunkers surround undulating greens. To add an accent and signature touch to the rolling mountainside terrain, Ross planted heather from his native Scotland. White birches and tall pines surround the course.

From the elevated first tee, players at the golf resort have a breathtaking view of Lake George and the Adirondack peaks. "Just as the US Open and PGA seek out Donald Ross courses for their tournaments, The Sagamore Golf Course is sought out by golfers everywhere so they can experience the traditional Donald Ross layout in natural, beautiful surroundings," says Tom Smack, director of golf and head professional, who has received numerous awards as a golf leader and was inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame for the region.

In 1985 the course was completely restored using Ross's original blueprints. Smack oversaw the $75 million restoration, which included reconditioning the course and adding a state-of-the-art irrigation system. While the golf resort is historic, modern technology has made it possible for golfers to view a "helicopter tour" of each hole and hear an audio description of its design and challenges. The tour is available on the resort's website at www.thesagamore.com.

In addition to its accolades from Golf magazine and Condé Nast Traveler, the golf resort has also been rated the "Fifth Best Public Course in New York State" by Golf Digest and Corporate and Incentive Travel named it one of its "Greens of Distinction."

The Sagamore Golf Course is open to the public (with advance reservations). Many of the club's 200 memberships comprise year-round residents and families who have summer homes in the area. A family membership, including children up to 18 years, is $3,800; single memberships are $2,600; and reduced rates are offered for Twilight memberships as well. One-year memberships include the full-service PGA pro shop, which offers everything from Titleist and Wilson clubs to Foot-Joy shoes (which are also available for rental), practice range, two practice greens, and the clubhouse.

The Club Grill, offering American specialties in an English Tudor setting, is open for lunch and dinner and features a magnificent view of the golf resort.
